Energising a data centre as forward thinking as Facebook itself with EATON

When Facebook set out to be one of the most energy efficient data centre operators in the world, we embraced their bold vision. Data centres consume tremendous amounts of power – between 1.7 and 2.2 percent of all the electricity in the U.S.

And with the world demanding more and more digital information with every passing year, the challenge truly inspired us. To think beyond the now and anticipate the industry's needs for tomorrow.

The design of Facebook's new 300,000 square foot facility in Forest City, North Carolina, US presented the opportunity to help power their ever-expanding network of one billion users with critical reliability and exceptional efficiency.

One metric of success is the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating. The average PUE for data centres in 2011 was 1.83. Facebook demanded better. Way better.

Eaton has already partnered successfully with Facebook to achieve a PUE of between 1.06 and 1.08 in its Pineville, OR data centre. Building on that success and our expertise in energy efficiency and back-up power protection, we rolled up our sleeves and helped design a unique solution for the Forest City facility.

Eaton's Power Xpert 9395 and 9390 UPS power and protect Facebook's networking infrastructure and servers. Both units have the highest efficiency rating (99%), smallest footprint, and lowest carbon footprint in the industry. Eaton's Energy Saver System (ESS) technology optimizes efficiency without compromising protection, all resulting in enhanced power reliability, efficiency and safety.

Forest City is well on track to putting Facebook at the forefront of energy efficient data centre design. Next project? Facebook's Lulea, Sweden facility.
